Located 30Km inland from the coatline in the outh of Valencia province, and just off the A-7 motorway, the small city of Xàtiva (it's commonly used Valencian name, or Jativa in Spanish) is an interesting and historic place. It has a large old quarter with many narrow cobbled streets, and is overlooked by the Moorish castle (part of which actually dates back to pre Roman times) perched on top of a hill.
The basilica or cathedral dates back to the 16th century (though wasn't finished until the 19th century) and was built on the site of a mosque.
The city has good rail connections, sitting on the main Alicante to Valencia line (approx 30 minute journey to Valencia) and also the high speed AVE Madrid/Albacete to Valencia due to be completed in 2010.
