Castellon de la Plana, to give it it's full name, is the capital city of Castellon province, the most northerly province of the three in the Valencia region. The city of Catellon was originally on higher ground but in the 13th century was established in it's current location on the plain (hence the name).
Being relatively small as cities go, it is pleasant to walk around and has an attractive old quarter which includes the 13th century cathedral with it's octagonal tower, and the is also a separate octagonal belltower built in the 15th century.
The Mediterranean shoreline lies 2Km from the edge of the city, an area known as Grao de Castellon and has a port, marina, and sandy beaches.
