The large town of Orihuela lies 25km inland from the coast but it's municipality reaches to the sea south west of Torrevieja, the area around Dehesa de Campoamor being refered to as the Oriuela Costa.
The town sits at 240m above sea level but the Sierra de Orihuela immediately to the north west rises to 400m making an impressive backdrop. Orihuela, which has Roman origins, boasts an Arabic castle, plus a cathedral built between the 14th and 16th centuries and the Baroque church of Santo Domingo.
You will also find a full range of shops, bars, and restuarants.
The fertile agricultural area to the south of the town grows citrus fruit, almonds, olives, palm trees, pomegranates, and vegetables, being partly watered by the River Segura which flows through the town.
