The small town of Monóvar sits at 500m above sea level, 35Km inland from the city Alicante, near the A-31 motorway which heads towards Albacete.
On two separate but nearby areas of high ground on the northern side of the town stand the 18th century Hermitage of Santa Bárbara (which offers excellent view of the town), and the ruins of the castle, built in the 12th and 13th centuries. Other notable buildings include the 18th century Church of San Juan Bautista, with its blue coloured roof, typical of the area.
Traditionally, the local economy would have been based on the growing of almonds and grape vines for wine production although textiles were also important in the 18th century.
