Officially known as Torre La Mata, La Mata sits 5km north of Torrevieja, on the Costa Blanca coastline. The town was originally a small community built on the strength of the salt industry, but is now an important holiday destination, though lacking high rise or large hotel developments.
One of the main attractions is the sandy beach, which merges into the sand dunes of Guadamar del Segura to the north. Immediately inland from La Mata lies the Blue Lagoon (though sometimes described as being green in colour), contrasting with the Pink Lagoon lying inland from Torrevieja. Both lagoons, which have been used for the production of salt for the past 300 years, form part of a 3700Ha nature park.
A promenade runs along part of the length of the beach, where you will find a selection of bars and restaurants.
