The city of Elche (known as Elx in Valenciana) is situated approximately 12km from the Costa Blanca coastline and 10Km from Alicante airport. It is the second largest city of Alicante provence, and the third largest of the region. In recognition of its importance, the local airport has been renamed Alicante-Elche airport.
Elche is well known for its date palm orchards. With approaching 200,000 trees, it is the only one of its type in Europe, one of the largest in the world, and has been declared a World Heritage Site. Traditionally, the local industry has been shoe making, the reason for the growth of the city during the 20th century.
In the centre of the city you will find the restored 15th century moorish Palace of Altamira.
