The city of Alicante, capital of the Alicante province, lies in the centre of the Costa Blanca with it's well known sandy beaches, and is home to the main airport in the area.
The city was founded by the Romans and has a castle perched on a hill, from where there are fine views over the city, port, and marina.
The city has an old quarter, Cathedral, and museum to visit plus beaches and a particularly impressive palm lined esplanade.
Alicante is well connected, having a high speed rail link with Madrid, the Euromed running north to Barcelona, and regional trains running south to Murcia (a high speed line being under construction).
A narrow gauge railway runs from near the harbour (separate from the main RENFE Alicante station) up the coast to Denia
