The attractive and historic city of Alcoy (Alcoi in Valenciana) sits astride the river Serpis which flows in a deep gorge, approximately 40Km north of Alicante and 35Km inland from Benidorm as the crow flies.
The city resides at around 550m above sea level and is surrounded by mountains of around 1000m, most notably, the Sierra de Mariola, a 17,000Ha natural park which rises immediately to the north.
The economy of this attractive area was traditionally based on paper and textile production, still very much in evidence today.
The realtively new A7 motorway gives good access to Alicante and Valencia, while the nearest coatline is accessed by minor but interesting roads. There is a limited rail service to Xativa, from where you can change trains for Valencia.
