The ALVIA is a new high speed train type that can run on either the hispeed trackor the standard Spanish Rail track, capable of 250km/hr (155mph) on the high speed track. The train is capable of changing guage between one track and the other without stopping (though it does have to slow).

The interiors and services of this train are to the usual high standard.

The Alvia from Madrid to Santander takes approximately 4 hrs 30 minutes and costs 40 - 65 Euros, while Madrid to Pamplona takes approximately 3 hrs 10 minutes and costs 45- 75 Euros
Madrid to San Sebastian takes approximately 5 hrs and costs 55 - 85 Euros
