The city of Pamplona, famous for the Running of the Bulls, part of the San Fermin fiesta held in July each year, is the capital city of the Navarra region. It is also however home to some stunning architecture.
The city, built on the banks of the river Arga, a tributary to the Ebro, dates back to Roman times, but possibly the most notable features today are the pentagon shaped fort and city walls dating from the 16th to 18th centuries.
Other buildings of note include a 14th century Gothic Cathedral with cloisters and a neoclassical facade, two further Gothic churches, the 14th century Cámara de Comptos, and the Baroque 18th century town hall. There are also 4 medieval bridges crossing the river.
Local industries include food processing and engineering, with alternative energy engineering becoming increasingly more important.
