Dominated by the castle palace, which was the Royal Court of the kingdom of Navarra in the Middle Ages, Olite lies in the centre of Navarra, 40 Km south of Pamplona, on the banks of the river Zidacos.
The castle was built in the 13th and 14th centuries, then extended in the 15th century by the then king of Navarra. The various extensions to the castle have resulted in a haphazard design which some consider make it the most attractive in Europe. The older part of the castle is now a Parador hotel.
The surrounding area is agricultural, growing cereal crops, and grape vines for wine production.
Olite has a rail station with a rail link to Pamplona and Zaragoza.
