The town of Barañain lies approximately 3Km west of Pamplona city centre and has a population of around 20,000. The town sits on a low elongated plateau, at the same level as Pamplona, with the rivers Arga and Elorz bordering 3 sides and having their confluence to the west.
Barañain has origins from pre-historic times and was also the site of a Roman villa. Traditionally the surrounding area was agricultural, growing cereals and pulses, plus grazing for livestock, although there is now an industrial area across the river to the north.
