Situated approximately 8Km south of the Mar Menor, and 5km inland from the Mediterranean, La Union was so named after being formed from the amalgamation of 2 villages a century ago. The town has a long history as the surrounding hills were mined for minerals in Roman times and shipped around the Mediterranean region. Mining finally ceased in the area in 1991, with the local economy now relying on agriculture and tourism.
La Union sits on a rail link running from Los Nietos on the Mar Menor coast to the city of Cartagena, with trains running approximately every hour. You will also find a good selection of shops, bars, restaurants, and a mining museum, which includes a trip into an old mine.
