The naval city of Cartagena, in the region of Murcia, was founded by the Carthagens in the year 230 BC and subsequently was important in Roman times, as evidenced by the remains of a Roman theatre (the second largest in Spain) and the ruins of other buildings.
You will also find a number of Art Nouveau buildings fro the 20th century.
Cartagena has been an important naval seaport since the 16th century and is still an important navel base today. There is a navel museum located here and the port has also become a favourite stop for cruise ships.
