Approximately 50 Km due north of Madrid, Rascafria sits in the wide scenic Lozoya valley at around 1200m above sea level. To the south-east the mountains rise to over 1600m, while to the north-west, the Sierra de Guadarrama mountains rise to over 2200m.
Buildings of interest include the 15th century church, and 18th century former coaching in, and the early 20th century town hall.
The Valdesqui ski centre lies approximately 20 south west of the village and can be accessed by car in around half an hour.
2 Km south west of Rascafria is the Monastery of El Paular, founded in the 14th century, with Gothic and Baroque architecture.
The local economy has traditionally relied on cattle farming and logging, but now tourism has a major importance.
