Madrid, the centre of Spain in more ways than one, the country's capital city since 1561.
It's history goes back further of course, having been settled by the Romans and fortified by the Moors who arrived in Spain in 711 and were pushed out of Madrid in 1085.
Many fine buildings and plazas have been built since this time and art lovers will find plenty to do. It is a very attractive city with a surprising amount of greenery, and of course you will find plenty of street cafes where life is surprisingly peaceful.
It is the third largest city in the European Union after London and Berlin, and has a population of just over 6 million.
