Located aproximately 25Km east of central Madrid, and 10Km east of Madrid airport, the city of Alcalá de Henares (usually refered to simply as Alcalá) lies beside the meandering Henares river.
The city has had quite a complicated history, with evidence of bronze age settlements, and later develpments by the Romans and the Moors.
The university was founded in the late 13th century and thrived, though then moved into Madrid in the 19th century. However, a new university was opened in 1977, utilizing the old buildings.
