The city of Vigo is located in the south west coastline of Galicia, approximately 25Km from the border with Portugal. Although the origins of the city are pre-roman - it has been built over a pre-roman fort and a Roman settlement, what you see now is mostly the result of rapid expansion in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The city suffered attacks and temporary occupation in the 16th and 17th centuries by the British and the Turks, resulting in the building of a city wall in the 17th century, parts of which are preserved today.
Vigo has a busy fishing and industrial port, the former providing plentiful fish ans shellfish for the markets of the Rúa Pescadería and O Berbés.
4Km south of the city you will find the beautiful Playa de Samíl - nearly 2Km of golden sandy beach.
