The city of Pontevera (capital of Pontevedra province in the south west corner of Galicia) sits at the head of a ria (deep inlet similar to a fjord or flooded estuary) of the same name, approximately 60Km from the Galician capital, Santiago de Compostela.
The city has a number of interesting buildings and an old city centre with cafes bars to interest tourists. The name Pontevedra means "Old Bridge", a reference to a Roman bridge which is no longer there although a 12th century bridge is near the site.
Pontevedra centre has a large pedestrian area encompassing the old part of the city which is worth a walk.
The city has good road and rail links to nearby cities, including a high speed rail link opened in 2015. The port is now located 6Km down the coast to accommodate larger ships, and there is a marina in the city.
