Located 25Km west of the city of Orense and around 45Km inland from the coast, the historic town of Ribadavia lies on the banks of the river Avia, close to where it joins the river Miño and the Castrelo de Miño reservoir. Together with an old quarter (which includes a 16th century town hall and an old Jewish quarter and synagogue), the town still has parts of the old town walls surviving, and the ruined remains of the 15th century castle.
The surrounding area is mostly agricultural with a strong tradition on wine production (Denominación de Origen - Ribeiro), which has existed since the 12th century.
Ribadavia has a rail link with Orense and is close to the A52 motorway.
