The port town of Rianxo (sometimes called Rainjo in Spanish) is located in a prominent but sheltered coastal position in the Ria de Arousa, 40Km south west of Santiago de Compostela. The large port area serves both fishing boats and pleasure boats. There is also a beach of fine pebbles/sand nearby, backed by pine trees, although the coastline is mostly quite rugged.
The local economy has been centred around fishing, particularly the cultivation of muscles in the Ria, though there has been some development in tourism in recent years.
