The town of Zafra lies 75Km south east of Badajoz, and 130Km north of Sevilla, on the plains to the east of the Sierra de Castellar (which rise to 800m above sea level. The surrounding area is agricultural, mostly growing cereal crops.
The dominant building in the centre of the town is the 15th century Alcazar fortress, which is now a Parador luxury hotel with an inner courtyard surrounded by cloisters. There are also houses dating from the 16th century in the area around the Alcazar.
Zafra has train station on the easstern edge of the town, giving train access to Badajoz and Sevilla.
