Lying on the fertile and irrigated plain growing orange trees beside the River Ebro, Xerta is situated 30 Km inland from the Costa Dorada coastline and the Delta d' Ebre (River Ebro delta).
It sits on the Via Verde (green route), an old railway line now used as a footpath and cycle track running from Tortosa, about 12 Km downstream and climbing a further 30Km up into the Els Ports natural park.
On the river, nearby, the river has the Xerta weir, built at the end of the 19th century to feed a canal either side of the river, which irrigate the rice producing fields in the delta.
