Tortosa, the largest town in southern Tarregona province, sits astride the River Ebro, approximately 15Km inland from the Ebro Delta Natural Park and the southern end of the Costa Dorada.
The moorish castle that sits above the town has been converted to a Parador (nationally run luxury hotel) but is still worth a visit, as is the 14th century Gothic cathedral in the old part of the town by the river.
The Episcopal Palace also dates back to the 14th century as does the convent of Santa Clara with it's Gothic cloisters.
Tortosa has a rail station from where there are approximately 10 regional trains per day to to Costa Dorada, Tarragona (journey time just over an hour), and to Barcelona (approximately 2.5 hrs).
Tortosa can make an ideal base for exploring the area, the Els Ports Natural Park or taking an organised fishing trip on the River Ebro, renowned for its catfish and carp.
