Lying approximately 250Km west of Madrid and 30Km from the Portuguese border, the small city of Ciudad Rodrigo sits on the northern bank of the Rio Águeda. The city, with Celtic and Roman origins has a number of notable buildings, including the cathedral built between the 12th and 14th centuries, the 15th century Hospital of the Passion and the 16th century Town Hall.
The old part of the city is still contained within the 12th century city walls and is separated from more modern develoment by a moat and lawns. In the south west corner of the old city, a 14th castle built by Henry II of Castile is located, on higher ground overlooking the river, now used as a Parador (state run hotel).
