The city of Santander sits on a rocky promontory, creating a large natural harbour, on the northern spain coastline, and is the capital city of Cantabria region.
Compared to many other Spanish cities, Santander is relatively modern, much of the old city having been destroyed by a fire in 1941.
Places of interest include the Magdalena Palace, built in the early 20th century for the royal family, and set in 24Ha of parkland on a promontory of it's own. The city also has some excellent sandy beaches, some in the sheltered Bay of Santander.
Santander is an important access point to Spain due to the ferries from the UK and is connected to the rest of the country by rail and road.
