The attractive small town of Liérganes lies on the banks of the Rio Miera, surrounded by rolling green agricultural countryside, approximately 10Km south of the city of Santander. The town was declared to be of national historic and artistic interest in 1978 due to its architecture dating from the 17th and 18 centuries.
Places of interest include the "Roman Bridge" which wa in-fact built in the 16th century, and the The Rañada Palace, also built in the 16th century.
Lierganes also has a spa hotel, utilising thermal mineral water believed to have healing properties.
The town has a narrow guage rail link to Santander with train running every hour during the day, and a journey time of 45 minutes.
