Zarautz is a small town on the flat sandy coast of Guipuzcoa province in the Basque Country, favoured by Spanish royalty in the 19th century, approximately 15Km wesst of the city of San Sebastian.
The safe beach (the largest in the province) and surf make it a popular destination on the Costa Verde today together with the historic town with plenty of places to try the renowned cuisine of the area. A hundred years ago, this was a fashionable place to holiday which only the wealth could afford - now it is more accessible to everyone.
A few Km inland from Zarautz lies the Pagoeta Nature Reserve, 29,000 Ha of land centred around Mount Pagoeta (678m).
