Claiming to be the birth place of Christopher Columbus, Porto Colom occupies a natural harbour (home to fishing boats and leisure craft) on the east coast of Mallorca. This is still a fishing village and not highly commercialised although it is a tourist destination.
Most of the village's seafront is effectively harbour and along it's length you will find a small selection of shops and restaurants.
The nearest beach is Cala Marcal, just to the south, a wide sandy beach in a sheltered rocky bay, and the clear waters in the area make snorkelling and scuba diving popular.
The sorrounding area is mostly natural woodland growing pine trees, with some fruit trees.
