The whitewashed village of Tolox lies 30Km inland from the Costa del Sol coastline, and 40Km west of Malaga city, in the hills, at around 300m above sea level. The village is situated on the eastern edge of the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park, which rises to over 1900m at its highest point, and as the name suggests, is likely to be snow capped at some point in the winter.
Tolox is possibly best known for its Balneario de Fuente Amarga, a spa dating from the 19th century whose mineral waters are believed to have theraputic qualities, particularly beneficial for various respiratory ailments. This spa is for medicinal benefits, not relaxation, and it is understood that clients have a medical test at the start of treatment.
