Located 40Km east of Malaga city and 8Km inland from the Costa del Sol coastline, the village of Sayalonga sits at 360m above sea level, in the Axarquia area. The older part of this whitewashed village (which has roman origins) shows typical moorish characteristics with narrow winding streets. One such street near the church is reported to be only 50cm wide at its narrowest point.
One of the most visited places in the village is its circular shaped cemetry - very unusual in Spain. A viewing point to view the cemetry and the surroundings has been built in recent years.
The surrounding rolling countryside has a combination of natural vegetation, olive and almond trees, plus grape vines growing on terraces.
