The small village of Salares, located 15Km inland in the attractive La Axarquía area, sits at almost 600m above sea level, approximately half way between the popular town of Cómpeta, and Lake Viñuela on the so called Mudejar Route (Mudejar being an archictural style developed by Muslims in Cristian areas). The village has a 16th centry church with a brick tower, typical of the style. Salares also has roman origens, as evidenced by a restored stone brige from that time, over the Arroyo de Fogarate.
Although facilities are limited, the village does have a health centre, shop, and bar.
The surrounding hills have natural vegetation and the mountains approximately 5Km to the north (Salares is on the edge of the Tejeda Natural Park and Game Reserve), rise to over 2000m.
