Situated northwest of Malaga city and approximately 35Km from the Costa del sol coastline, the whitewahsed town of Alora lies on high ground just west of the Rio Guadalhorce valley.
Alora sits at around 200m above sea level with hills to the west rising to over 400m. There are smaller hills adjacent to the town on the east and southern sides, the latter being the original location of a Phoenician castle, later destroyed by the Visigoths, then rebuilt by the Moors, now ruined but, with some interesting remnants preserved.
There is a selection of small shops, banks, bars and restaurants.
There is also a train station just below the town, close to the river, with a regular service to Malaga and to the north.
