Lying northeast of Malaga city and approximately 40Km inland, on the northern edge of the La Axarquia area, the village of Alfarnate lies in a wide valley at an altitude of 900m (making it the highest village in the province), with mountains around rising to 1400m.
The small village has a number of interesting buildings, including the 16th century town hall, believed to be th oldest town hall in the Malaga province. The 17th century Venta de Alfarnate (a venta being an inn) located just outside the village is also believed to be the oldest venta in the province, and is now partly a museum.
