The village of Alcaucin lies approximately 20Km inland from the eastern Costa del Sol coastline and around 5Km east of Lake Vinuela, in the area known as Axarquia. The whitewashed village sits at 400m above sea level, against the west facing slopes of the Sierra de Tejeda, which rise steeply to 2000m, then run along the border between the provinces of Malaga and Granada.
This is a quiet village with no through traffic.
The village has Moorish origins, as evidenced by the narrow winding streets and the ruins of the Moorish Castillo de ZalÃa (which is thought to have been built on the site of a Phoenician fortress), located on the other side of the river, within the Municipality.
