The city of Jaen, capital of the province of the same name in the Andalucia region, lies approximately 125Km from the south coast and 300Km from Madrid, at 420 to 570m above sea level (it is built on a slope).
The city is dominated by the magnificent Renaissance style cathedral, begun in the 16th century in its centre, and overlooked by the castle (partly of Moorish origins and partly now a parador hotel) on nearby high ground at 815m above sea level. Another buiilding of interest is the 16th century, Renaissance style, Palace of Villardompardo, under which are the well preserved Arab Baths, thought to be the largest in Spain.
Around the city are large areas of olive groves, this being the olive oil capital of Spain.
