An old fishing village situated on the Río Piedras estury, sheltered from the Atlantic by a spit of land called La Flecha (the Arrow), El Rompido is located approximately half way between the city of Huelva and the Portuguese border, on the Costa de la Luz.

The surrounding area has coastal pine woods, sand dunes, and salt marshes, and are part of the Natural Park known as Marismas del Río Piedras y la Flecha del Rompido Natural Area.

The nearest sandy beaches and sand dunes are on the spit 300m across the river estuary, which can be accessed by boat trip accross the inlet, but there are many more sandy beaches to choose from.
There are a selection of bars and fish restuarants along the water front.
