Montefrio is located in the Andalucian province of Granada, on the border with Cordoba province. It is a whitewashed town with a Moorish feel built on the side of a rocky outcrop, surrounded by agricultural land, mostly with olive groves.
It has a population of 6,500 and is 833 metres above sea level. A church and the ruins of a Moorish castle sit on the top of the rocky outcrop overlooking the town in a spectacular position. The main church in the town is unusual due to being largely circular with a domed roof.
There are several shops, bars and restaurants and it is famous for salchichon and various other sausages also Morcilla. A market is held every Monday.
