Granada was first settled in prehistoric times and later colonised by the Romans.
It was invaded by the Moors and controlled by them until it fell to the Christians in 1492 (it had been the last city to stay under the control of the Moors and had been the centre of Moorish power since 1236).
Granada is possibly most famous for the Alhambra, a massive series of palaces and gardens built in the 14th century, presenting an outstanding example of Spanish Renaissance architecture.
The Alhambra visitors of today range from the interested tourist to the architect or landscape gardener who comes to be inspired by this amazing place, which through the winter, has the backdrop of the snow covered Sierra Nevada.
