Located in the north east corner of Granada province, Baza sits on a plateau at about 850 m above sea level, with higher ground to the north, west and south. The Sierra de Baza 15Km to the south west of the city rises to over 2200m.
12Km to the north of Baza is the large artificial lake, Embalsa de Negratin, with thermal baths on the southern (Baza) side.
This was an important trading centre in Roman time and continued to be in the time of the Moors.
The old town of Baza has attractive buildings which reflect the town's historic past, including the Archaeological Museum dating from the 16th century. Parts of the ancient Alcazaba walls still remain, while the 13th century Arab Baths are mostly complete.
Much of the landscape is arid with contrasting areas of vegetation around the rivers that flow from the higher ground.
