Rute is a whitewashed town overlooking the Iznajar reservoir and is located on the edge of the Sierras Subbeticas Natural Park.It has a population of 10,000 and is 700 metres above sea level. There are a number of shops, bars and restaurants and it well known for its aniseed flavoured liquor along with home produced cured ham and sweet delicacies such as marzipan and nougat. There is a museum called "Museo Artesanal del Mantecado" displaying traditional methods of how the Turron and Mazapan were made.
There are many walks and hiking trails in the Sierras Subbeticas Natural Park and nearby is a famous Donkey Sanctuary where you can have a ride on the donkeys.
Malaga Airport is 50kms away and the beach 46 kms.
