Located on the most southerly point of mainland Spain (and of all continental Europe), the town of Tarifa is probably best know as a centre for wind sports (particularly wind surfing and kite surfing). This down to the often windy conditions here plus the 10Km of glorious wide sandy beaches.
Tarifa is also a good location for viewing migratory birds which funnel down to this most southerly point to make the 14Km crossing to Africa. Other wildlife spotters can watch whales and dolphins in the relativly narrow straights, as they move between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.
This whitewashed town with narrow cobled streets in the old part has some historic buildings, including the Guzman castle dating from the 10th century. There are also remains of medieval town walls including one of the gates dating from the 13th century.
