Located in the middle of the Costa de la Luz, across the bay from the city of Cadiz and 20Km from the city of Jerez, Rota sits at the southern end of the 16Km long golden sandy beach of Playa de la Ballena.
Rota is a fair sized town with a long history, surrounded by flat farmland. The town has a naval base, which whilst being Spanish, is funded by the United States and is effectively a US navy base, and is an important port of call for US navy ships moving in or out of the Mediterranean.
The US involvement in the port has been reduced in recent years and is no longer the main source of income for the town. being overtaken by tourism, although fishing is still important.
