Castellar de la Frontera effectively consist of two parts - the old village which mostly exists with the walls of a medieval castle on a hill, and the new town at the bottom of the hill 9Km away by road. The new town was built in the early 1970's, the old village mostly becoming derelict at that time. However, the old village, which has a unique location overlooking the Guadarranque lake and with far reaching views, became repopulated, mostly by non Spanish.
The new town, located north of Gibraltar, 15Km from the coastline has useful facilities, and being on the A-405, is well connected to Gibraltar and Algeciras.
The old village and castle are inside the Los Alcornocales Natural Park, while the new town lies just outside.
