The slightly sleepy town of Tabernas lies in the desert area of Almeria province, known as the Tabernas Desert, the only true desert in Europe, having an area of around 300 sq Km.
The town has a small selection of shops, bars and restaurants, and is overlooked by a ruined moorish castle on a small hill.
Within the desert and just west of Tabernas, lies the old film sets used for filming the Spaghetti Westerns (including For a Few Dollars More, and the God, the Bad and the Ugly) in the 1960's. Of these, Fort Bravo, Western Leone, Mini Hollywood now exist as tourist attractions and are well worth a visit. Also, just outside the town, is one of the worlds largest research centres for solar power, which has a visitor centre.
