Lying 60Km inland from the Costa de Almeria coastline and 7Km from the main road running up the Almanzora valley to Baza, the whitewashed village of Lúcar stands at almost 900m above sea level. The village is effectively on the side of a mountain rising to 1700m above sea level, known as the Sierra de Lúcar, which forms part of a small group of mountain ranges known as the Estancias, offering good walking or hiking possibilities. The village also offers stunning views across the Almanzora valley to the south, to the Sierra de Filabres.
On the edge of the municipality lies the Balsa or Fuente de Cala, a pool 50m across and used for swimming, fed by hot water springs at around 24 degrees - this warm water source having been noted by the Romans.
