The small historic town of Gergal lies in the foothills of the Sierra Filabres to the east of the Sierra Nevada and north of the Tabernas Desert at an altitude of approximately 750m above sea level.
The town sits on a border between agricultural land (mostly olives and almonds) and relatively barren mountain.
Gergal is appriximately 35Km inland from the city of Almeria, just north of the A92road to Granada, which lies at a distance of just over 100Km.
The town, which contains a number of historic buildings, is overlooked by a 16th century castle (which is now a private house). There is a small selection of banks, shops, and bar/restaurants.
