Peņiscola, located at the northern end of the Costa del Azahar about 40 Km south of the Ebro Delta Natural Park.
Peniscola has been referred to as the city in the sea due to the castle and old town of whitwashed houses standing on a rocky outcrop that is almost surrounded by the sea and forming one side of the harbour where a small fishing fleet land their catch.
The castle, was the Papel Palace for the Antipope, Benedict XIII, in the early 15th century and is, together with the old town of Peņiscola, a popular tourist attraction. The old town of Peņiscolar is a maze of narrow streets where plenty of bars, restaurants, and gift shops are to be found.
To the south you will find a series of rocky coves while there are miles of golden sand to the north running to Benicarlo.
