The naval city of Cartagena, in the region of Murcia, was founded by the Carthagens in the year 230 BC and subsequently was important in Roman times, as evidenced by the remains of a Roman theatre and the ruins of other buildings.
Cartagena is still an important navel base and has a navel museum.
