
The Roman Theatre at Merida

Located in central western Spain, on the Guadiana river, approximately 240km south west of Madrid, Mérida was very important city in Roman times, and is the richest in Roman remains, having been founded in the year 25 BC.
The Roman remains include:
The semicircular theatre which would have held 6,000 people, has undergone some restoration work is occasionally used.
The Arco de Santiago, a 13m high triumphal arch with 4 rows of columns.
The arched bridge across the river Guadiana.
Merida also has a Moorish castle, the Alcazaba, built on the site of a Roman castle.
